WATCH OUT!!! Flying turkey

On the way home from church this past Sunday, at 45 mph, a giant turkey flew out in front of our car. It was maybe 4-5 feet off the ground and we missed it by about 2 feet. Scared the mess out of my wife Janny.

It reminded me to watch out for “turkeys” in life because you never know when they will fly up in your area trying to mess you up.

Don’t be like this guy Part 1

The other day I received a coverage solicitation. Names have been removed.

Hello my name is [removed] and i am the Music Manger of [removed] and [removed] please review the intro. bio of both artist and also go to there page and listen to there music at myspace.com/ [removed]  myspace.com/ [removed] can call me direct or email me [removed] cell number is [removed]

I’m no English Major myself but… this is my first impression of you! You’re a “Manger”? Spell check homey! I’m not trying to pick on folks but you’ve got to do a better job at presenting yourself. This is the stuff that people at magazines laugh about during break times. We get stuff like this all the time. It’s not only a waste of my time but yours too.

When you put yourself out there on your own or someone elses behalf, are you sloppy? Professional? Consider stuff like that before you hit “send mail” or before you seal up that mail package.

Did I say that? (Urkel)

Something I said during a conversation about the factions in our scene… It’s a pretty strong statement, maybe too bold but has some element of truth. What do you think?

“It is predicated entirely on COMFORT rather than talent or truly digging into content… If I HEAR the right stuff, it must be good. Right?”

Is merely saying the right things (the appearance of good) “enough”? To some folks that seems to be the case.

Kendall Urhines vs. Lula Does The Hula

Absolutely crazy names.

A while ago, when we rebuilt the Sphere of Hip-Hop message forum, my brother (from another mother) Jon created our “rankings”. Stuff like “fake louis vitton” and “gold teef”… even an extra special one “Urhines Kendall Icy Eight Special K.” I thought to myself… what in the world is that all about. Then I learned.

Just a few weeks ago I saw a new article about a judge in New Zealand that ordered a name change. Apparently some parents named their child “Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii“, seriously. There is an obvious humorous element to it but after that wears off… it’s just plan strange. Poor kid.

Some highlights…

Allowed names: Violence; Number 16 Bus Shelter; Midnight Chardonnay; Benson and Hedges (twins)

Blocked names: Yeah Detroit; Stallion; Twisty Poi; Keenan Got Lucy; Sex Fruit; Fat Boy; Cinderella Beauty Blossom; Fish and Chips (twins)

Seriously? Wow.

Here Lies the Cassette Tape

Some of you reading this maybe never owned a Walkman or anything with a tape deck. For others a cassette tape stirs up fond memories of when hip-hop seemed to be a bit more pure (with respect to artistry).

Almost 20 million cassette players sold in one single year as recently as 1994. In 2007 a paltry 48,000 sold. When was the last time you bought an album on cassette tape? Who was it? Drop a comment.

I managed to pick up the last few dozen copies of what were likely the last albums in our scene to be issued on tape. Uprok Records released their first 4 releases on the tape format:

  • Sup the Chemist “Dust”
  • MG! the Visionary “Transparemcee”
  • Ill harmonics “An Octave Above the Original”
  • Sinner’s Prayer “Hip-Hop Praise”

Just the other day I stumbled across them when cleaning out the Sphere of Hip-Hop “wherehouse”. I love the newer technology of CDs and digital (MP3 etc) but nothing takes me back like a cassette tape or even a vinyl record.

On the way home today I’m listening to my second copy (wore out the first) of Solseekers’ debut.

I’d love to read your comments.

R.I.P. cassette tapes.
